Ingredients

  • 8 chicken drumsticks
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes, optional
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water, optional for thickening
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

 Method

1. Prepare the chicken

Pat the drumsticks dry with paper towels. This helps the seasoning stick and gives the chicken better color.

Season the chicken with smoked paprika, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and thyme.

2. Make the sauce

In a bowl, whisk together:

  • Soy sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Honey
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Minced garlic
  • Chicken broth

Mix until the brown sugar is mostly dissolved.

3. Add everything to the slow cooker

Lightly brush the slow cooker with olive oil. Arrange the chicken drumsticks in a single layer as much as possible.

Pour the sauce over the chicken.

4. Slow cook

Cover and cook:

  • LOW: 4–5 hours
  • HIGH: 2–3 hours

Cook until the chicken is tender and reaches at least 165°F / 74°C internally.

5. Thicken the sauce

For a thicker, glossy sauce, transfer the liquid from the slow cooker to a small saucepan.

Mix 1 tbsp cornstarch with 2 tbsp cold water. Stir it into the sauce and simmer for 2–3 minutes until thickened.

Pour the sauce back over the chicken.

6. Optional browning

For the beautiful caramelized finish shown in the photo, place the cooked drumsticks on a baking sheet and broil/grill for 2–4 minutes, watching closely.

Brush with some of the sauce before serving.

 Serving Suggestions

Serve these juicy chicken drumsticks with:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Steamed rice
  • Roasted potatoes
  • Green beans
  • Corn on the cob
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Fresh salad

The extra sauce is especially delicious spooned over rice or mashed potatoes.

 Cooking Tips

  • Pat the chicken dry before seasoning for better browning.
  • Don’t overcrowd the slow cooker.
  • For extra flavor, marinate the chicken in the sauce for 30 minutes before cooking.
  • The broiling step is optional but gives the chicken a much more appetizing caramelized appearance.
  • Don’t rely only on cooking time—check the thickest part of the chicken with a thermometer.
  • If your soy sauce is very salty, reduce the added salt.
  • For a spicier version, add cayenne pepper or extra chili flakes.

 FAQs

1. Can I use chicken thighs instead of drumsticks?
Yes. Boneless or bone-in chicken thighs work very well. Adjust cooking time depending on their size.

2. Can I make this without brown sugar?
Yes. Replace it with additional honey or maple syrup, although the flavor and caramelization will be slightly different.

3. Can I prepare this ahead of time?
Absolutely. Cooked chicken can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.

4. How do I get the chicken extra crispy?
After slow cooking, place the drumsticks under the broiler/grill for a few minutes until the outside becomes caramelized and slightly crisp.

5. Can I freeze the leftovers?
Yes. Allow the chicken to cool completely, then store it in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to about 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat thoroughly.
