Ingredients

  • 1 package (about 24–28 oz) frozen potato-and-cheese pierogies

  • 12–14 oz smoked kielbasa sausage, sliced into rounds

  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened and cubed

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tablespoon butter, for greasing or added flavor

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional

Instructions

1. Prepare the slow cooker. Lightly grease the inside of a 5–6-quart slow cooker with butter or cooking spray.

2. Add the pierogies. Place the frozen pierogies in the slow cooker in an even layer. There is no need to thaw them first.

3. Add the sausage and onion. Scatter the sliced smoked sausage and onion over the pierogies. Sprinkle with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper.

4. Prepare the creamy sauce. In a medium bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of chicken soup and chicken broth until smooth. Stir in the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Small cream-cheese lumps are fine; they will soften as the dish cooks.

5. Pour over the ingredients. Spread the creamy sauce evenly over the pierogies, sausage, and onions. Gently distribute it with a spoon without breaking the pierogies.

6. Slow cook. Cover and cook on LOW for 3–4 hours or HIGH for 2–3 hours. Cooking times vary by slow cooker, so check that the pierogies are hot throughout and tender. Avoid frequent lid opening.

7. Add the cheese. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar over the top during the final 20–30 minutes. Cover again until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes creamy.

8. Finish and serve. Gently stir if desired, taking care not to break the pierogies. Taste and adjust the seasoning, then garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm.
