Ingredients

Meat patties

  • 500 g ground beef

  • ½ medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning

Sauce & vegetables

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 large onion, sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 400 g canned diced tomatoes

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • ½ cup water or beef broth

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp oregano

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp sugar, optional

Method

  1. Mix beef, chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and seasonings. Don’t overmix.

  2. Divide into 4 large patties, about 125 g each.

  3. Heat oil in a large oven-safe skillet. Brown patties 3–4 min per side; remove.

  4. Sauté sliced onion and bell pepper for 4–5 min.

  5. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, water/broth and seasonings. Simmer 5 minutes.

  6. Return patties to the sauce, spooning sauce over them.

  7. Cover and bake at 190°C / 375°F for 25–30 min, until the beef reaches 71°C / 160°F internally.

  8. Rest 5 minutes and serve with the tomato sauce.
