Ingredients

  • 1½ lbs smoked sausage or kielbasa, sliced
  • 3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¾ tsp salt, or to taste
  • 1 tsp honey or brown sugar, optional
  • Fresh parsley or thyme, for garnish

Method

  1. Prepare the ingredients: Peel and cube the sweet potatoes. Slice the sausage and onion, then mince the garlic.
  2. Season: Add sweet potatoes, onion, and garlic to a large bowl. Pour in olive oil and melted butter. Add paprika, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Toss until well coated.
  3. Add to slow cooker: Place the seasoned sweet potatoes and onions into the slow cooker. Add the sliced sausage on top.
  4. Add broth: Pour the chicken broth around the sides. Drizzle with honey or brown sugar if you want a slightly sweet flavor.
  5. Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  6. Finish: Gently stir everything together. Taste and adjust seasoning. Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme.

Cooking Tips

  • Cut the sweet potatoes into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly.
  • Browning the sausage in a skillet before adding it gives the dish extra flavor.
  • Don’t add too much broth—the vegetables release their own moisture.
  • For a spicy version, add ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Chicken or turkey sausage can be used instead of pork sausage.
