Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the ground beef
Place ground beef in a large mixing bowl.
Add the egg, breadcrumbs, finely minced onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
Mix gently with clean hands until everything is combined.
Avoid overmixing because this can make the patties tough.
Step 2: Shape the beef patties
Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions.
Shape each portion into an oval-shaped patty approximately ¾ inch thick.
Press gently in the center of each patty to help prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
Step 3: Brown the patties (optional but recommended)
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add a little oil.
Brown the patties for approximately 2–3 minutes per side.
They do not need to cook completely at this stage.
Browning creates a delicious caramelized exterior and adds extra flavor to the gravy.
Step 4: Prepare the vegetables
Peel and slice the onion into thin strips.
Wash the red and green bell peppers.
Remove the seeds and slice into strips.
If using mushrooms, clean and slice them.
Step 5: Arrange ingredients in the slow cooker
Place the sliced onions, red bell peppers, and green bell peppers in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
Add sliced mushrooms if desired.
Arrange the beef patties over the vegetables in a single layer where possible.
Step 6: Prepare the creamy mushroom gravy
In a large mixing bowl, add:
– Cream of mushroom soup
– Beef broth
– Worcestershire sauce
– Dijon mustard
– Garlic powder
– Black pepper
– Dried thyme
Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Step 7: Pour the gravy over the patties
Slowly pour the mushroom gravy mixture over the beef patties.
Make sure the patties and vegetables are coated with the sauce.
Use a spoon to spread the gravy evenly.
Step 8: Slow cook
Cover the slow cooker with its lid.
Cook using either setting:
– LOW: 5–6 hours.
– HIGH: 3–4 hours.
Cook until the beef patties are tender and reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
Avoid opening the lid repeatedly.
Step 9: Check the gravy
Carefully remove the lid.
Gently move the patties aside with a spatula.
Stir the gravy and vegetables.
The sauce should be rich, savory, and full of onion and pepper flavor.
Step 10: Thicken the gravy
If you prefer a thicker gravy, combine cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl.
Whisk until smooth.
Stir the mixture into the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on HIGH for another 10–15 minutes until the gravy thickens.
Step 11: Final seasoning
Taste the gravy.
Add extra black pepper or salt if needed.
Sprinkle fresh chopped parsley over the top.
Step 12: Serve
Place a generous portion of creamy mashed potatoes on each plate.
Carefully place a Salisbury steak patty on top.
Spoon plenty of creamy mushroom gravy, onions, and bell peppers over the beef.
Serve hot and enjoy!
